Ads at Shibuya Station Ads at Shibuya Station

Today I am starting a new series of posts about Shibuya that will span over the next few days and where I will be showing multiple aspects of this Tokyo district.

Photos have been taken with my Sony a7ii camera, so if you have the chance to see them on a computer screen, you'll enjoy them even more than on a smartphone.

We start today's tour at Shibuya train station, where there are some big ads that are seen by many people every day. On the top side there is an ad from SoftBank (mobile phone carrier) and the anime series Shadowverse, which is currently being broadcast on television. Below there are two Nintendo Switch ads.

Nintendo Switch is the best-selling game system in Japan. In fact, in 2020 87% of the consoles sold here in Japan were Nintendo Switch, with over 6 million units sold. It is no wonder that with such market share in Japan they may have ads in such a prominent place. The sales of Nintendo Switch worldwide already reached 80 million units.

People at the Shibuya Crossing People at the Shibuya Crossing

I never get tired of walking around this place. Despite the fact that we are still in the last days of the state of alarm in Tokyo and there are no tourists in Japan for over a year now, all the people here give this place a great atmosphere. All giant screens in buildings are continuously broadcast videos with sound, by the way :)

In the background of the photo is the Shibuya Ikea shop, which is taking a whole, multiple-storey building. Unfortunately you cannot buy big furniture directly from here, just small items or food.

Treasure is a Korean pop group made up of 12 boys. Music groups made up of many members are quite successful in Asia. One of the most popular groups lately in Japan is AKB48, which as the name suggests, are 48 girls.

It is impressive to see how in Shibuya there are giant screens everywhere, even on some secondary streets.

Ads on a Giant Screen at Tokyo Ads on a Giant Screen at Tokyo

The ad on this giant Shibuya screen is asking people to perform a Google search, rather than offering a url or domain to see more information. The reason for this is that it is easier to type a Japanese keyword than a full website domain with Latin characters.

Some ads from the Shibuya restaurants and bars that are not located by the ground floor but on the upper ones as well.
